Data Integration with Jitterbit

Jitterbit is an amazing Open Source data & application integration suite. A Free Community Edition is available for download and use.

Face it, manually importing and exporting Data between applications or databases in csv text files to keep data synchronized in rather old school. It’s simply a stone age method from the primitive dinosaur era. Technology has evolved and so have the tools. You may have heard the Buzz about Data Synchronization or Data Integration. It’s well worth your time and investment to explore it. Tools such as Jitterbit can save you literally days or weeks in data migration, import, export, integration or synchronization, including the scheduled automation of such tasks.

The fact remains that most databases that drive websites are separated from the information systems or applications that businesses use. Worse yet, even many of the applications or information systems in a business are separated. There often is a serious need to keep data consistent between these systems. To make certain customer information, orders, product information, inventory tracking and other types of information is up to date and valid.

Now days, there is a lot of Buzz about using Web Services to help achieve this. There is a literal cloud of services or SaaS (Software as a Service) available today. Some Software as a Service (SaaS) businesses such as salesforce.com provide Web Service API’s to support this. However, text files, EDI and other methods are commonly still used. But wouldn’t it be nice to have a tool that does it all? One that allows you to move and synchronize data between different systems, applications and sources.

I normally don’t get excited over the discovery of new software. Jitterbit is truly an amazing Open Source data and application integration suite.

With Jitterbit you can integrate data between applications, Databases, Web Services, XML data sources, legacy systems, flat-files and more.

I stumbled upon Jitterbit while working on Data import/export synchronization issues for an iHTML Merchant Mall project. Did I mention that this is truly an amazing tool to have on hand? The only draw back is that requires the installation and use of the Postgres Database server, but that’s no big deal considering the true value and power of this tool.

The Jitterbit Integration Environment makes connecting even the most complex enterprise applications simple with a standards-based approach that includes native support for the major transports and protocols that you need to reach your systems:

  • ODBC/JBDC connectivity to all major databases.
  • Internet protocols including HTTP(S), FTP, S/FTP, SMTP and POP3
  • Complete XML and Web Services support
  • Java Messaging Services (JMS) to publish and subscribe to a message bus such as IBM WebSphere MQ, Tibco, JBoss and others
  • Hosted Web Services that allow you publish your own web services directly from the Jitterbit UI.

Jitterbit is extremely flexible at supporting all the different ways to get at your data. With Jitterbit you can move data, update records or otherwise perform data integration of…

  • Enterprise Applications - PeopleSoft, Oracle Financials, JD Edwards, Microsoft Dynamics, and more…
  • Databases - Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, MySQL, Sybase, Teradata, and more…
  • Existing SOA Platforms - webMethods, Tibco, Vitria, IBM WebSphere, BizTalk, BEA WebLogic, and more…
  • 3rd Party Applications - QAD, Infor, Vertical Response, Interwoven, AMS Advantage, Microsoft Sharepoint, Documentum, Amazon.com, and more…
  • SaaS Applications - Salesforce.com, Sapien, SoftScape, RightNow!, Siebel On-Demand, and more…
  • Other Systems - Web Services, XML, Simple and Complex Flat Files, Legacy Systems, Active Directory, LDAP, 3rd Party Portals, Application Servers, and more…

All of these connectivity capabilities are available within a single application which means you can complete multiple integrations without ever leaving the UI. Jitterbit is a UI (User Interface) driven application. It allows you to visually map the data are working with.

Connectivity is decoupled from the source and target systems which means you never have to make changes to your production systems or install additional adapters. Less headaches to deal with.
